What to Do in Canela with Kids: 10 activities, and the warnings that are missing

Canela is different from Gramado when you have children, and it's worth knowing before you plan. Gramado has enclosed theme parks, with flat, predictable routes. Canela has nature — and nature, with a small child, means steps, heights and distance.

That's not a problem: it's the reason Canela is the favourite of teenagers, who tend to find everything in Gramado childish. It just changes the maths.

The 10 activities

1. Mundo a Vapor — ten rooms, a train and a Ferris wheel

A theme park dedicated to steam machines, with a miniature railway, a sawmill and a power plant, spread across ten themed rooms. There's a train ride through the woods and a 52-metre Ferris wheel.¹

Age: works from 3 to 12. The train is what the little ones remember; the machines are what the older ones find interesting.
Duration: half a day.
Decisive advantage: it's covered. Save it for the rainy day and it solves the whole morning.

2. Big Land — the indoor attraction downtown

An indoor theme park that works well in any season — which is why it became one of the town's main covered options.²

Age: it's the most comfortable for the 4-to-12 range, and the one that holds time best with controlled temperature.
When to go: a cold or rainy day, or the afternoon when nobody wants to get in the car again.

3. Space Adventure — the pieces that have been to space

An exhibition with original pieces from NASA space missions and a planetarium show.³

Age: it shines from 7 or 8 — below that, the child sees objects behind glass. With a curious teenager, it's the attraction that tends to surprise.
Duration: one to two hours, indoors.

4. Alpen Park — the sled that runs down the mountain

Sixty thousand m² with the Alpine Coaster, a sled that runs down the mountain on 37 rails, plus a zip line, a treetop course and a climbing wall.⁴

Age: it's the teenagers' attraction in Canela. Adventure activities usually have minimum heights and ages — check before buying tickets for the whole group.
Warning: it's outdoors. In heavy rain the rides usually stop.

5. Caracol Park — and the conversation about those 927 steps

A hundred hectares around the 131-metre free-fall waterfall. There are viewpoints, a 927-step staircase down to the base and a cable car. Open 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.⁵

Age: all — as long as the plan is the cable car.
⚠️ The warning the lists leave out: going down 927 steps with a child is easy and fun; coming back up is another matter. With a small child, either you carry them up or you don't go down. The cable car exists for exactly that.

When to go: right at opening, before the viewpoint fills up.

6. Skyglass — and the child who freezes on the glass

A suspended glass platform that juts 35 metres out from the cliff, 360 metres above the Caí River.⁶

⚠️ With a small child, think twice. A glass floor over 360 metres of nothing is exactly the sort of thing that freezes a five-year-old at the entrance — and then nobody enjoys it. With a teenager it's the opposite: it's usually the photo of the trip.
And it depends on the weather: in thick fog, you pay to see white.

7. Estação Campos de Canela — the stop that settles the group

The old station, now with shops, restaurants and kiosks, from sweets to hot chocolate.⁷

Why it matters with children: it's where everyone eats what they want with no negotiation, and it's covered. Every family trip needs one place like that per day.

8. The Stone Cathedral and the light show

The Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, in basalt stone. Visiting is free; the tower and the sacred art museum are paid. At night there's a light show on the façade.⁸

Age: the light show holds any age for ten minutes — and it's free, outdoors, at the end of the day.

9. The artisans' colourful little houses

The Canela Artisans' Association, with its rows of colourful little houses.⁹

Why with children: it's short, it's colourful and it's free — the perfect break between two paid activities. Save it for a cloudy day: strong colour under sun blows out and loses its glow.

10. An old-fashioned photo session — ours

This is our studio: Recordar Fotos, with a branch in Canela and one in Gramado. It's on this list for a practical reason: dressing up is a children's activity, and here it comes with period costumes, a built set and someone directing the pose.

Age: from 3 up it usually works well.
Duration: about an hour, indoors, by appointment — which counts for a lot in Canela, because it's the only activity of the day that depends neither on the weather nor on driving.
Why it's worth it: it's the only photo of the trip where the whole family appears together and dressed up. In the rest, somebody is holding the phone.

What to avoid with the little ones

• Long trails. The Serra's ground turns to mud after rain, and a trail with a small child always has a carrying stretch.
• Going down the 927 steps with no plan for coming up. Worth repeating: it's the most common mistake at Caracol Park.
• Two adventure parks in one day. Alpen Park is already a full day in energy.
• Counting on the viewpoint on a winter morning. Fog closes the valley, and children have no patience for waiting it out.
